Guild Update 6th December 2014

Guild Christmas Lunch

Mike Peters writes:

I asked the Secretary to delay this week’s bulletin until after the Guild Christmas Lunch which took place at the Union Jack Club in London yesterday. I have to report that the event was a huge success with many members staying on well into the evening. These events do not happen without a significant amount of hard work and I thank Andy Thompson for his efforts planning and organising what was a very enjoyable afternoon full of Christmas cheer laced with banter and stories. Andy’s skill-set as a Head Teacher was however stretched a little as there was a degree of herding cats! Year 9 students are apparently easier to control than a gaggle of Guides enjoying a day off from the battlefields. Before lunch started I took the opportunity to give the members, Guild Supporters and Guild Partners who were present some feedback from the AGM and some thoughts on the direction that the Guild will be taking in 2015 - I will be circulating a full Chairman’s Despatch to the entire membership before Christmas in which I will be expanding more formally on this. During the lunch Andy announced that the Christmas Lunch 2015 will take place in London on 4 December - You all have 12 months notice, put it in your diary and come along and enjoy a Guild social event. Those people who stated that they would be starting validation in 2015…I haven’t forgotten who you are!

Somme Validation Day 30th January 2015

Secretary writes:

A validation day has been arranged in the Somme area on the 30th January 2015. Those wishing to undertake assignments 1, 5 or 6 are asked to send their details to Alison Hine asap. The event is open to all - not just members based in France. If there are enough people form the UK interested in attending, group transport will be arranged.

If you would like to attend please contact Alison Hine at alison@hine49.org.uk.

Despatches - the Next Edition

Secretary writes:

The next edition of Despatches is scheduled for March 2015. If you have an article that you would like to put forward please send it to me before the end of February 2015.

Agincourt 1415

Peter Hoskins Writes:

Pen and Sword have recently published my book Agincourt 1415: A Tourist’s Guide to the Campaign, written with Professor Anne Curry :http://www.pen-and-sword.co.uk/Agincourt-1415-Paperback/p/7902 . The book tells the story of the campaign and the battle and guides the tourist, on foot, by bike or by car, along the route from the landings near modern Le Havre through the battlefield to Calais. It shows surviving monuments contemporary to the campaign. Pen and Sword have offered a 20% discount to members using the code 212514, although it looks as though a similar discount is openly available on their website!

Hire of Mini Bus

Ken Lees writes:

I have been asked, by someone who is arranging a visit to Ypres with his extended family, for recommendations of any companies that hire mini-coaches (with driver) for two days next May. There will be about 12-15 people in total, so a minibus would be too small. They will be travelling independently to Ypres and meeting there to start their tour.

I have never hired a mini-coach for the Ypres area would welcome any experiences or recommendations to pass on.

Willem Kleijn writes:

I've put all my pictures and those Wybo made, in downscaled resolution, in a Dropbox file. Anyone interested, please send me an email, and I will allow them to copy pics of their choice from this file
The only thing one has to do is register an account with www.Dropbox.com (free)

If anyone wishes to have any of my pics in original resolution (not Wybo's) , they should  mail me the number of the pics  required.
Please note: file size is 10mB per pic!, so please allow your mailbox to receive this kind of data.
