The Revised Validation
Package
Tim Saunders writes:
Work on this by our Chief Validator, Chris Finn and the rest
of the VTeam, is nearly ready for circulation to Validators and the Council. We
still aim to release the new version before the end of June. In the meantime
the old written assignments may still be submitted as in the past.
Validation Autumn 2015
Tim Saunders writes:
Following on from the Cranwell weekend in September the
Dieppe Validation weekend will take place over the weekend 28/29 November
2015. Primarily aimed at those candidates on the Near Continent it will
be open to all other candidates, as time in the programme permits. As Dieppe is
within striking distance, halfway (ish) between Normandy and the Somme we hope
to see plenty of members coming forward for validation from those locations.
There will, however, be a one day Validation event in SE England over the
weekend 14/15 November in order to fill the void left by the move of the AGM
and its associated validation opportunity to February 1916.
Details of both events to follow but expressions of interest
to Alison Hine please valsec@gbg-international.com
Even though the focus of the Dieppe weekend is very much
validation it is intended to run a low key battlefield tour on the Sunday in
such time as is available before dashing to the ferry.
Clandon Park Fire
Simon Worall writes:
Sad news that the National Trust property Clandon Park, near
Guildford in Surrey, has been largely destroyed by fire. Fortunately no-one was
injured in the blaze, which started in the basement area.
The basement housed the Regimental Collections of the East
Surrey Regiment and the Queens (Royal West Surrey Regiment), as well as the
collection of the Princess of Wales Royal Regiment.
At the time of writing the entire collection is reported
lost, apart from 5 Colours which the Fire Service have managed to save.
The Surrey History Centre has reported that: 'The regimental
archives & papers & photographs of individual soldiers, already
transferred to them, remain safe and accessible'.
It is a terrible loss to students of military history and to
friends of the Surrey Regiments and their successors. It remains to be seen
whether any part of the collection might now be salvaged and renovated by
experts.
Fields of Battle Lands of
Peace Gallipoli 1915
Secretary writes:
Mike Sheil's exhibition Fields of Battle, Lands of Peace:
Gallipoli 1915 was featured at the recent International Peace Conference
held in Istanbul to launch the Gallipoli commemoration.
Mike writes that:
'It was an extraordinary experience with over 70 national
delegations including the Prime Ministers of Australia and New Zealand, HRH The
Prince of Wales and the Irish President, Michael D Higgins. Irish participation
in relevant WW1 events is now becoming an accepted fact which is a really
marvellous development and this growing spirit of reconciliation in Dublin
which enables the descendants of Irish soldiers to regard their ancestors as
men of honour rather than traitors to the Republican 'cause' is very exciting.
The exhibition is now going to be put on extended display in
Ankara and I feel very honoured that the Turkish government should have chosen
me as a foreign photographer to commemorate such an important part of their
history.'
