Ypres Cat Festival

Duncan Barnes writes:

The weekend of 9 and 10 May sees the triennial Cat Festival (Kattenstoet) take over Ypres.  The town centre and ramparts will be very busy on Saturday 9 May, and closed to traffic for most of Sunday 10 May. On Sunday there will be events in front of the Cloth Hall in the morning, and the festival procession in the afternoon. This will depart from the road where most of us park for the Last Post, pass through the Menin Gate, into the town centre, along the Boterstraat, and then via Tempelstraat and Stationstraat to the Station. When the last of the procession has passed (takes a long time) there will be further Cat and Witch happenings in the town centre.

It’s a fantastic event if you are a spectator (40,000+ visitors in 2012), but a big challenge if you are guiding in the Salient that weekend!

New Battlefield DVDs

Tim Saunders writes:

Members may be interested to note two new DVD releases from Battlefield History TV:

The Siege of Bastogne. The second of BHTV’s series of films on the Battle of the Bulge has been released on DVD this week. Filmed in the same wintery conditions as the battle was fought in, the BHTV team of Guild members take viewers to the scene of the action around the vital and surrounded ‘road octopus’ of Bastogne. The battles fought by the 101st Airborne Division as a whole (not just Easy Company) are of course the stuff of legend but the team also examine at the battle from the German perspective, as Hitler insisted on his big solution and the Strike to the River Meuse.

First Battle of Ypres and the Race to the Sea  -  The fifth and final title in the 1914 series of films, covers, in two parts, the redeployment of the BEF north from the Aisne Front to Flanders. Here with the Schlieffen plan having failed the largest and most terrible battle of the War so far was fought over the best part of a month. Badged Guild member Vern Littley joins the BHTV team makes his screen debut, including a scene, as long serving members would expect, on Nonne Bosschen!

Copies of both DVDs are available from Guild Member Andrew Duff and the BHTV website.
