Guild Update 28th January 2016

The Guild AGM Weekend

Secretary writes:

The Guild AGM weekend starts tomorrow. Accordingly the Update is being issued today. Don’t forget the bring and buy – if you have items for sale bring them along. Don’t forget your battlefield tour agenda if you’re going on that!

May I wish everyone a safe journey to Northampton and an interesting and productive weekend. Good luck, especially, to all the candidates attempting the Validation assignments over the weekend!

I look forward to seeing you all!

·         Jeroen Niels from The Netherlands joins. His interests are WW2

Annual Subscriptions

Jo Hook writes:

It’s that time again to start thinking about membership renewal. The window for membership renewal this year will be open from 1st January 2016 to 1 March 2016.  The payment remains the same at £75.00 per year.  There are various methods of payment you can use.  We are urging people more and more to pay their subscription electronically by BACs or standing order – it is faster, can be tracked by us and more efficient from an administrative perspective.  However, we also realise that the “good old fashioned” cheque is still the preferred way for some and will accept these but we will be increasingly moving towards electronic payment for the future.  Guild bank account details can be found on the website along with a step by step guide on how to pay electronically.  Cheques should be made payable to the Guild of Battlefield Guides Ltd.  Details can be found at http://www.gbg-international.com/bank_account.html                                                                   )

If paying by BACs please ensure you use your name and membership number as a reference so we can identify your payment and please don’t forget to email the Membership Secretary at mbr.sec@gbg-international.com to confirm payment has been made. If paying by company cheque please can you ensure that your name is on the back as we cannot always connect a company with an individual!!

If you do not wish to renew your membership please inform the membership secretary so that she can carry out the necessary administrative process.

Somme Commemorations Update

Mike Scott writes:

Somme 141 – CWGC, RBL, DCMS

On each of the 141 days of the Somme, the Royal British Legion has been asked by the UK Government’s Department of Culture, Media and Sport to deliver a short midday service at the CWGC Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme. The intent is for senior representatives from communities to lead the ceremony on specific days linked to action of their respective Pals Battalions, Regimental Associations or local personages. These daily services will not only mark the sacrifice of those who fought and died on each of the 141 days of the Battle of the Somme, but provide those who have missed out on attending the commemorations on 1 July 2016 an opportunity to attend a service at Thiepval and pay their respects. Regimental Associations, Veteran groups and Commonwealth Governments have already earmarked dates to take the lead, and CWGC are continuing to receive applications from members of the public who wish to attend and pay their respects on personally significant dates, as well as Battlefield Tour Groups who are in the vicinity between July and November.

The CWGC are currently putting together a calendar with a programme of the daily services which is soon to be published online, and they are keen to extend the invitation to attend or participate to as many individuals, groups and organisations as possible. If any of your colleagues in GBG would like to be involved, further information on the daily services and a form to register interest in attending or participating in some way (either by laying a wreath or saying a few words etc.), can be found on our website: http://www.britishlegion.org.uk/remembrance/ww1-centenary/somme-141/

Holts Maps

Tonie and Valmai Holt write:

We have recently received several orders from members for our Battlefield Maps, obviously unaware that Guild members are entitled to a discount of one-third on orders of 5 + copies of the same map. There isn’t a facility to make a bulk order on our website, so requests should be made by email

Our Ypres (10th Edition) and Somme (7th Edition) Maps have been very recently updated and our Normandy Map (4th Edition) was updated for the 70th Anniversary.”

The Data Protection Act

Secretary writes:

It has recently been brought to my attention that guides that receive personal data about clients should be registered with the Information Commissioners Office under the auspices of the Data Protection Act. A barrister at recent seminar on the topic told one of our members (a) do not rely on what the ICO say regarding this subject (they will suggest that you don't need to be registered), and (b) if guides receive or hold personal data about people going on tours in electronic form they must register even though they are not the 'data processor', and (c) if they receive potentially sensitive personal data (about people's health or about minors) they would be in  real difficulty if they were party to any data loss, but difficulties may be abated if they were registered and could point to data protection policies being in place (i.e. when are tour operators' participant lists permanently destroyed by the guide, and the safeguards they put in place to protect against data loss ).

This is an issue that guides may wish to consider for their own protection. The cost of registering with the ICO is £35 per annum and is easily done through its website.

Another Badged Guide

Secretary writes:

Congratulations are due to Steve Cocks who has now completed the validation programme and been awarded his Guide Badge.

Guild Battlefield Recces

Secretary writes:

2016 will be Ian Mitchell’s last year of designing and then jointly leading very successful WW2 Battlefield Recces for the Guild.   After discussing the issue with the Guild Secretary and listening to input of those who regularly attend these events (this will be the 5th) two options for this year’s recce are under consideration.

Option 1- Operation Market Garden Recce

A 4 -5 day Guild recce conducted in early October 2016 which will primarily focus on the US Airborne and 30 Corps actions during Operation Market Garden. This event will also devote time to visiting selected stands associated with the 1st Airborne Division battle at Arnhem.  The recce will include stands on the Polish Airborne Brigade and actions of the 43rd Wessex Division.  Tony and Ian are also   looking at the possibility of having a 1.5 day extension to visit stands on Operation VARSITY.

Option 2 - British and Canadians in Normandy Recce

This 4 day Guild recce would be conducted in late September or early October in Normandy. The focus of this recce will be key British and Canadian operations in Normandy campaign June –July 1944.  The event will cover the battles in and around Bayeux and Caen including Operations Perch, Epsom, Windsor, Charnwood, Jupiter, Atlantic and Spring.  This event would apportion time almost equally to British and Canadians actions.  The recce would however also include the option to extend the recce by a 1.5 additional days to study stands on Operation Totalize and Tractable.

Feedback please:

Tony and Ian would like to understand the level of members’ interest and preference for the 2 proposed recces before selecting an option and commencing detailed planning. Can those members who would be interested in either OR both of the above events contact the Guild Secretary and state their interest and order of preference.

Closure of the Firepower Museum

Vern Littley writes:

An extract from the official Firepower Trustees statement may be of interest to members:

Firepower will move from its current site by the end of 2016. The capital receipts from an arrangement over the existing site will be re-invested in the development of a proposed new purpose-built heritage centre for the Royal Artillery Collection at Larkhill on Salisbury Plain, close to Stonehenge. The exhibits will go into a storage facility in Wiltshire where the Collection will be held until the new museum site is ready, perhaps in 2020. As the move out of the Woolwich Arsenal site will take several months, the Board has decided to close the Museum to the public at close of business on Friday 8thJuly 2016. This will allow us to contribute to the Royal Artillery’s Tercentenary on 26th May 2016 and the Centenary commemoration of the first day of the Battle of the Somme on 1st July 2016.

During transition, we also plan to: establish a virtual museum online; explore the possibility of maintaining a small temporary exhibition in another museum; maintain controlled access to our archive and library; undertake travelling exhibitions and; run artillery themed re-enactment days at our future museum site on Salisbury Plain.

My Boy Jack

Tom Thorpe (WFA) writes:

Members may be interested to read details of the latest research into the mystery surrounding the death and burial of Rudyard Kipling's son Jack.

Authors Graham Parker and Joanna Legg suggest that the only son of famous poet and author Rudyard Kipling, who died 80 years ago today, is correctly buried in a grave marked with his name in St Mary’s Advanced Dressing Station Commonwealth War Graves Commission Cemetery (CWGC) near Loos.

Naseby Battlefield Tour

Anthony Rich writes:

For those members going on the Naseby battlefield tour on the Friday prior to the AGM weekend, the briefing note is attached. This gives the timings and rendezvous point. Please print off a copy and bring it with you on the day.

Guaranteed no trenches, barbed wire, or poison gas (furze hedges, rabbit warrens and manure will have to do instead, these are less industrial times we are dealing with). As a concession to less devout adherents of more recent conflicts Chris & I have decided to let attendees off mandatory psalm singing and the three hour sermon based on the pronouncements of one of the dustier & crabbier Old Testament prophets, unless said attendees get uppity at question time. This was, however, still an age when good, indeed godly, “Sky Pilots” really were critical to all arms!

AGM Validation Sessions

Chris Finn writes:

With the AGM approaching I thought it would be useful to remind candidates exactly what will be expected of them at the Validation sessions (and afterwards).

In the fourteen months I have been Chief Validator it has become manifestly apparent to me that those who pass the Assignments have read and followed the instructions in the Validation Manual, and those who don't haven't.
It has also become apparent that many candidates are getting a lot of well-meaning, but misleading and sometimes downright wrong, advice from other candidates or from Badged Guides.  THE ONLY AUTHORITATIVE SOURCE OF ADVICE IS CONTAINED IN THE ASSIGNMENT DESCRIPTIONS IN THE VALIDATION MANUAL.

Please also note that Assignment 1 is aimed at "a group of people of varying expertise..." and candidates therefore cannot pick their own narrower, or specialist, target audience.

Assignments do not ask you to demonstrate your favourite Stand or showcase your latest piece of research.  They ask you to complete a specific task in order to evidence specific skills.  That is what the Validators will be looking for, and nothing else.

Will Townend Award

Secretary writes:

Members are reminded that the closing date for submission of their nomination for the Will Townend Award is 15th January 2016. Please submit your vote by email to the Secretary, the ethos behind the award and the criteria for nomination is published on our website at: http://www.gbg-international.com/guild_awards.htm

Please take the time to read the criteria and to nominate a fellow member - Only members of the Guild may vote and no seconder is required, this is a members vote.

The Will Townend Memorial Award commemorates the unselfish contribution made to the GBG by the late Will Townend. The trophy was donated to the GBG by Will’s fellow Battlefield Guides at Anglia Tours.
Award Ethos The award honours the memory of the late Will Townend, in particular his willingness to share his extensive technical knowledge of Artillery and his wider knowledge of battlefields in general with his fellow Battlefield Guides.
It is also intended that those nominated for the award will be recognised as selfless members of the GBG who freely and unselfishly share their knowledge with their peers.

Qualification Period & Criteria The Will Townend Award is an annual award that will be presented retrospectively in recognition of conduct over the preceding year. This award is restricted to GBG members. All categories of GBG Membership are eligible to be nominated for this award.
Voting Procedure Prior to the AGM, usually in the early Autumn, the Secretary will call upon the Membership (of all categories) to nominate for the Award.
All members  of all categories will then have the opportunity to vote on a one member, one vote basis.

Guild Facebook Page

Chairman writes:

We are pleased to announce that Guild Member John Harris has taken over the role of administering the Guild’s Facebook page from the chairman. Members will have already noticed an increase in FB activity and should keep an eye on our page in future for topical posts on battlefield related subjects. Queries on FB related issues should be addressed to John via the page or directly via his email address as listed in the membership contacts list. Thank you John and good luck with developing the FB Page further.

The National Army Museum

Secretary writes:

The Guild is in conversation with the NAM about a behind-the-scenes event and briefing about the new museum prior to its reopening in November 2016. The date for the event is set provisionally as Thursday 29th September, from 2pm - 4pm.

Parking at Maidstone Services

Secretary writes:

It seems that the WH Smith counter at Maidstone Services has had a new till system which doesn't include a button for the concessionary parking price we have negotiated. I've spoken to them and hopefully they are getting it sorted. Please let me know if you get any problems.

2016 Diary Dates

Graeme Cooper writes:

Some dates for your diary:

·         GBG Annual Golf Championships 2016: This will take place at the John O’ Groats Golf Club of Friday 19th August
·         GBG Badged Guides Dinner 2016: This will take place in London on 20 August

The Times History of the War

Graham Parker writes:

I would like to inform members about an excellent opportunity to purchase a large set of magazines -The Times History of the War- which a good friend has passed to me. The lady owner tells me that her grandfather collected the 1914, 1915, 1916 and 1917 full issues of the magazine during the war. They really are a must for any member who wishes to have more detailed information for guiding use. The many photos are excellent and the information therein contained is very good indeed. The lady is asking £150 for the whole collection which bearing in mind their future value is well worth the cost for a member guide.

If any member is interested could they contact me on my email address to discuss delivery etc.
