Guild AGM Weekend
Secretary writes:
Can those who have not yet paid for their place at the AGM
weekend please do so as a matter of urgency? Please either send me a cheque or
pay directly into the Guild bank account by BACS. Overseas members who it has
been agreed will be paying in cash at the event please ignore this reminder!
AGM Validation Sessions
Chris Finn writes:
With the AGM approaching I thought it would be useful to
remind candidates exactly what will be expected of them at the Validation
sessions (and afterwards).
In the fourteen months I have been Chief Validator it has
become manifestly apparent to me that those who pass the Assignments have read
and followed the instructions in the Validation Manual, and those who don't
haven't.
It has also become apparent that many candidates are getting
a lot of well-meaning, but misleading and sometimes downright wrong, advice
from other candidates or from Badged Guides. THE ONLY AUTHORITATIVE
SOURCE OF ADVICE IS CONTAINED IN THE ASSIGNMENT DESCRIPTIONS IN THE VALIDATION
MANUAL.
Please also note that Assignment 1 is aimed at "a group
of people of varying expertise..." and candidates therefore cannot pick
their own narrower, or specialist, target audience.
Assignments do not ask you to demonstrate your favourite
Stand or showcase your latest piece of research. They ask you to complete
a specific task in order to evidence specific skills. That is what the
Validators will be looking for, and nothing else.
Annual Subscriptions
Jo Hook writes:
It’s that time again to start thinking about membership
renewal. The window for membership renewal this year will be open from 1st
January 2016 to 1 March 2016. The payment remains the same at £75.00 per
year. There are various methods of payment you can use. We are urging
people more and more to pay their subscription electronically by BACs or
standing order – it is faster, can be tracked by us and more efficient from an
administrative perspective. However, we also realise that the “good old
fashioned” cheque is still the preferred way for some and will accept these but
we will be increasingly moving towards electronic payment for the future.
Guild bank account details can be found on the website along with a step by
step guide on how to pay electronically. Cheques should be made payable
to the Guild of Battlefield Guides Ltd. Details can be found at http://www.gbg-international.com/bank_account.html
)
If paying by BACs please ensure you use your name and
membership number as a reference so we can identify your payment and please
don’t forget to email the Membership Secretary at mbr.sec@gbg-international.com
to confirm payment has been made.
If you do not wish to renew your membership please inform
the membership secretary so that she can carry out the necessary administrative
process.
Will Townend Award
Secretary writes:
Members are reminded that the closing date for submission of
their nomination for the Will Townend Award is 15th January 2016. Please submit
your vote by email to the Secretary, the ethos behind the award and the
criteria for nomination is published on our website at: http://www.gbg-international.com/guild_awards.htm
Please take the time to read the criteria and to nominate a
fellow member - Only members of the Guild may vote and no seconder is required,
this is a members vote.
The Will Townend Memorial Award commemorates the unselfish
contribution made to the GBG by the late Will Townend. The trophy was donated
to the GBG by Will’s fellow Battlefield Guides at Anglia Tours.
Award Ethos The award honours the memory of the late Will
Townend, in particular his willingness to share his extensive technical
knowledge of Artillery and his wider knowledge of battlefields in general with
his fellow Battlefield Guides.
It is also intended that those nominated for the award will
be recognised as selfless members of the GBG who freely and unselfishly share
their knowledge with their peers.
Qualification Period & Criteria The Will Townend Award
is an annual award that will be presented retrospectively in recognition of
conduct over the preceding year. This award is restricted to GBG members. All
categories of GBG Membership are eligible to be nominated for this award.
Voting Procedure Prior to the AGM, usually in the early
Autumn, the Secretary will call upon the Membership (of all categories) to
nominate for the Award.
All members of all categories will then have the
opportunity to vote on a one member, one vote basis.
A New Badged Guide
Secretary writes:

announce that Anthony Rich has now achieved his Guiding Badge number 74 - well
done Anthony!
The Cross of Sacrifice at
Tyne Cott
Steve Smith writes:
There has been an interesting debate on Twitter recently
about whether it's right to stand on the Cross of Sacrifice at Tyne Cot. A
number of people became involved, which included IGBG guides, and as a result
the Director General of the CWGC Victoria Wallace became involved and this is
her reply.
I thought other guides would find it interesting because it
clarifies their stance on it especially when people on tours often make note of
others standing on the cross or note the behaviour of others.

A lecture and sandwich lunch 12.30-2.00pm Wednesday 20
January 2016 Hosted by The Fusiliers Museum London in the Officer's Mess of The
Royal Regiment of Fusiliers HM Tower of London.
Frank Baldwin writes:
The centenary of the battle of the Somme is one of the major
commemorative events of 2016. The heavy casualties on the first day of the
battle have become a symbol of sacrifice. Yet much of the public
perception is myth. This talk is based on recent research that challenges
some of the myths.
Our hosts will be the Fusiliers Museum and the event
includes a sandwich lunch a glass of wine and the opportunity to network in the
exclusive surroundings of the Fusiliers mess in HM Tower of London. If you
would like to attend this lunchtime talk, please make a donation of £25 for
each attendee (£20 for members of the Battlefields Trust) and email your name,
contact number and any special requirements (dietary/mobility) to helen@battlefieldstrust.org On
receipt, email confirmation will be sent together with directions to the venue.
If you have any questions, please ring 0207 387 6620. We look forward to
welcoming you.
In order for you to be receive a pass allowing you access to
the RRF Building inside the Tower of London and be included in the catering you
must book at least 48 hours before the event.

Redoubt Fortress Threat
Ryan Gearing writes:
As you are probably aware, the military collections at the
Redoubt Fortress are under threat of removal. Eastbourne Council have carried
out a so called consultation, but have omitted to include the option of the
military collection being retained. They claim to have over 700 returned
consultations, 97% of which state that they only want a local history museum.
However if you look at the document this is the only question they have been
asked.
The Royal Sussex and Sussex Combined Services collections
represent the finest military collections in the South East outside London and
if you value them, then I urge you to complete the questionnaire, ignoring the
stories section but going to the last box and state that you want to see the
military collections retained or something similar and to pass this onto as
many people as you know to complete and submit. Time is of the essence as they
tried to keep this quiet. The survey is not even linked to from the Redoubt
website!
