Annual Subscriptions
Jo Hook writes:
It’s that time again to start thinking about membership
renewal. The window for membership renewal this year will be open from 1st
January 2016 to 1 March 2016. The payment remains the same at £75.00 per
year. There are various methods of payment you can use. We are
urging people more and more to pay their subscription electronically by BACs or
standing order – it is faster, can be tracked by us and more efficient from an
administrative perspective. However, we also realise that the “good old fashioned”
cheque is still the preferred way for some and will accept these but we will be
increasingly moving towards electronic payment for the future. Guild bank
account details can be found on the website along with a step by step guide on
how to pay electronically. Cheques should be made payable to the Guild of
Battlefield Guides Ltd. Details can be found at http://www.gbg-international.com/bank_account.html
)
If paying by BACs please ensure you use your name and
membership number as a reference so we can identify your payment and please
don’t forget to email the Membership Secretary at mbr.sec@gbg-international.com
to confirm payment has been made. If paying by company cheque please can you
ensure that your name is on the back as we cannot always connect a company with
an individual!!
If you do not wish to renew your membership please inform
the membership secretary so that she can carry out the necessary administrative
process.

Guild Battlefield Recces
Secretary writes:
2016 will be Ian Mitchell’s last year of designing and then
jointly leading very successful WW2 Battlefield Recces for the
Guild. After discussing the issue with the Guild Secretary and
listening to input of those who regularly attend these events (this will be the
5th) two options for this year’s recce are under consideration.
Option 1- Operation Market Garden Recce
A 4 -5 day Guild recce conducted in early October 2016 which
will primarily focus on the US Airborne and 30 Corps actions during Operation
Market Garden. This event will also devote time to visiting selected stands
associated with the 1st Airborne Division battle at Arnhem. The recce
will include stands on the Polish Airborne Brigade and actions of the 43rd
Wessex Division. Tony and Ian are also looking at the
possibility of having a 1.5 day extension to visit stands on Operation VARSITY.
Option 2 - British and Canadians in Normandy Recce
This 4 day Guild recce would be conducted in late September
or early October in Normandy. The focus of this recce will be key British and
Canadian operations in Normandy campaign June –July 1944. The event will
cover the battles in and around Bayeux and Caen including Operations Perch,
Epsom, Windsor, Charnwood, Jupiter, Atlantic and Spring. This event would
apportion time almost equally to British and Canadians actions. The recce
would however also include the option to extend the recce by a 1.5 additional
days to study stands on Operation Totalize and Tractable.
Feedback please:
Tony and Ian would like to understand the level of members’
interest and preference for the 2 proposed recces before selecting an option
and commencing detailed planning. Can those members who would be interested in
either OR both of the above events contact the Guild Secretary and state their
interest and order of preference.

Closure of the Firepower
Museum
Vern Littley writes:
An extract from the official Firepower Trustees statement
may be of interest to members:
Firepower will move from its current site by the end of
2016. The capital receipts from an arrangement over the existing site will be
re-invested in the development of a proposed new purpose-built heritage centre
for the Royal Artillery Collection at Larkhill on Salisbury Plain, close to
Stonehenge. The exhibits will go into a storage facility in Wiltshire where the
Collection will be held until the new museum site is ready, perhaps in 2020. As
the move out of the Woolwich Arsenal site will take several months, the Board
has decided to close the Museum to the public at close of business on Friday
8thJuly 2016. This will allow us to contribute to the Royal Artillery’s
Tercentenary on 26th May 2016 and the Centenary commemoration of the first day
of the Battle of the Somme on 1st July 2016.
During transition, we also plan to: establish a virtual
museum online; explore the possibility of maintaining a small temporary
exhibition in another museum; maintain controlled access to our archive and
library; undertake travelling exhibitions and; run artillery themed re-enactment
days at our future museum site on Salisbury Plain.

Authors Graham Parker and Joanna Legg suggest that the only
son of famous poet and author Rudyard Kipling, who died 80 years ago today, is
correctly buried in a grave marked with his name in St Mary’s Advanced Dressing
Station Commonwealth War Graves Commission Cemetery (CWGC) near Loos.
