The commemoration of the BATTLE of LE CATEAU on 26 August, 2014, has been complicated by local elections and the departure of the previous organiser / liaison officer – Claude Jorion. The new chap is M Jean-Claude Legrand - jeanclaude.legrand@fr.mahle.com. The various groups that we know are attending include –

Please could you let me [nick@nickybirddesign.com] know if you or your group are attending, or if you know more than I do about the plans for the day. I am acting as a sort of adjutant and letting all participants know what to expect, where ceremonies and services will take place, and whether there is free booze and where it can be enjoyed.

Nery and the Retreat from Mons

Tim Saunders writes:

Released this week is the third title in BHTV’s 1914 series Nery and the Retreat from Mons. Originally it was going to be Le Cateau and the Retreat but Guild members Ian Woodbridge, Paul Oldfield and Mike Peters did such a good job telling the story of the Retreat on the ground that Le Cateau became a stand alone film, with Nery, Cerizy and Villers Cotteret, along with insightful living history content from Ed Church, also becoming a good strong film in its own right. The Tour de France 1914

Duncan Barnes writes:

The week in which Ypres hosts the start of the 5th stage of the 2014 Tour de France is a good moment to look back to the Tour of 1914.

It began on 28 June 1914, the same day as fateful events in Sarajevo. The race finished a week before the outbreak of the Great War and was won by a 24 year old Belgian from Anderlecht, Philippe Thys. He had also won the year before.

Many of the riders of 1914 served in their nations' armed forces, and became casualties. Thys was a pilot with the Belgian air force and had the good fortune to survive.

The Tour was suspended during the war and resumed in 1919. Thys went on to win the event again in an era dominated by Belgian riders. In the peleton he was nicknamed 'the General'

The legendary Thys retired from competitive cycling in his thirties and died in 1971 in Brussels at the age of 80.
