Battlefield Threatened

Mike Peters writes:

Members may care to note that there is a planning application for 600 solar panels to be sited on Winceby Battlefield.

It would be a great help if you could write a letter of objection to ELDC at the link below, every little helps.

The official deadline for letters has passed, but letters are still accepted after this time and if relevant should be considered even up to the last day before the meeting (provisionally 26th June).

News from Australia

Dennis Weatherall writes:

WO Keith Payne VC was one of only four Australian's to be awarded the VC in Australia's 12 years fighting the Viet Minh & North Vietnamese Army in Vietnam. He was awarded his VC for action on 24th May 1969 - Kontum Province South Vietnam. WO Payne VC is alive and a mentor to our newest VC recipients from the Iraq & Afghanistan conflicts. I've met Keith on a number of occasions you may one day like to read his book: "Payne VC" by Mike Colman - a story of Australia's most decorated solider of the Vietnam War(ISBN 978 0 7333 2488 8).

All four were operatives in what we called the AATTV - Australian Army Training Team Vietnam.

Three WO's + One Major. All were fighting with the South Vietnamese Army in and around the Central Highlands of South Vietnam. This area is close along the boarder to Cambodia in the south and Laos in the centre & north of the country. It was through this area the North Vietnamese Army (NVA) infiltrated into South Vietnam via the Ho Chi Minh trail.

Major Peter BADCOE VC - KIA 7th April 1967 - Thua Province South Vietnam. Buried: Terendak Military Cemetery Malaysia

WO Rayene (Ray) SIMPSON VC - date of action: 6-11th May 1969 - Kontum Province South Vietnam. Died 18th Oct 1978. Buried: Yokahama War Cemetery - Yokahama Japan.

WO Kevin WHEATLEY VC - KIA 13th November 1965 - Tra Bong Valley, Quang Ngai Province South Vietnam. Buried: Pine Grove Memorial Cemetery Blacktown NSW Australia.
