D Day Anniversary

Members going to Normandy between the 4th - 8th June are advised to refer to the official MoD website - https://www.gov.uk/government/topical-events/d-day-70 which explains the accreditations you will need to move around the area. I have had a conversation with the MoD people and at the moment it seems that the major security 'lock down' will take place on the 6th and that relatively free movement with be possible on the 5th.

New DVD Released

Tim Saunders writes:

‘Le Cateau’ the second in the series of WW1 films by BHTV, featuring Guild members was released on DVD this week by Pen & Sword Digital. It picks up the story of 1914 from the start of 5th Division’s withdrawal from the canal line west of Mons and charts the epic 24 hour march back into France astride the Mormal Forest to the hills above Le Cateau. Here with the cavalry outposts driven in General Smith Dorrien, with the Germans snapping at his heels was forced to stand and fight on 26th August 1914.

The team, Paul Oldfield, Mike Peters, Andrew Duff, Tom Dormer and Tim Saunders, take the viewer through the battle, with the whole being supported with maps and diagrams, to II Corps break clean and the dreadful night march to St Quentin. While Ed Church provides vignettes on the soldier’s clothing and equipment.

The third part of the series ‘Nery and the Retreat from Mons’ is at an advanced stage and will be available within the next four weeks or so.
