Guild Update 3rd October 2015

November Validation

Tim Saunders writes:

Despite repeated requests for validation opportunities on the near continent, so far we have had a nil response to the proposed Dieppe session.  Perhaps the fag end of the guiding season is keeping candidate’s attention focused on the short term or perhaps by choosing Dieppe as venue, half way between the Somme and Normandy, we were just being too clever! So a change of approach: any guide based on the near continent who wishes to validate Assignments 1, 5 or 6 in November please submit your name and location (Ypres, Somme or Normandy) to Director of Validation (tim.s@battlefieldhistory.tv) and we will see if we can come up with a plan. November is now less than a month away so ‘Action this day’ please.

Chris Finn is still taking names for the SE UK session also in November.

The Battle of the Somme - 100 Anniversary

Mike Peters writes:

I represented the Guild at a reception and briefing on the Somme 100 commemorations held at the French Embassy in London on Monday 28 Sep 15. The event was sponsored by the French Tourism Development Agency and officials from French central and regional governments. The message was very positive and overwhelmingly one of Anglo-French cooperation. It was refreshing to hear that the vision of the commemorations extends beyond the events of 1 July 1916. In fact the programme is planned to extend out until the end of the 1916 campaign on 18 Nov 16. One of the interesting initiatives mentioned at the briefing was the intent of the RBL to hold a daily act of remembrance at Thiepval at midday.

The new website supporting the anniversary looks to be useful and includes an ongoing calendar as well as information on local accommodation, guides and general tourist updates. Individuals, Tour Operators and other organisations are encouraged to post their own notices onto the website in order to widen collective situational awareness on the Somme and in the UK. I have included a link that leads to a blog from the event and an informative press pack that members should find useful.

Please visit our article on our blog to have a look on the press pack and on our Pinterest account to see the pictures of the event.
