Guild Update 11th September 2015



New Members

·         Jan Van Heese from Nijmegen Netherlands joins. His interests are Nijmegen Grosebeek, Arnhem – Oosterbeek, Overloon – Venlo Betuwe (the Island) Lower Rhineland (Germany)
·         Desmond Hayley from Aldershot joins. His interests are WW1 and WW2
·         James Aitchison from Bristol joins. His interests are D- Day Normandy
·         Darren Sheerin from Warwickshire joins. His interests are First and Second world War with emphasis on Western Front for WW1  and Special Forces Operations for WW2

Battle of the Somme Centenary Commemorations

I have recently represented the Guild at a meeting called by the DCMS for tour operators to discuss the Somme Commemorations in 2016. A summary report is attached to this Update which members may find useful..

New Edition of the Somme Battlefield Map

Members may be interested to note that we have just published the 7th edition of the Somme Battlefield Map, greatly updated with many new memorials and sites of interest, edition of our Somme Battlefield Map.

In it we have  included an image of what we call ‘The Coveted Badge of the Guild of Battlefield Guides’, beside the logos of the Somme Battlefield Partners and the ‘Sites de memoire de la Grande Guerre’, to promote interest in the Guild.

Members who wish to  provide their travellers with maps and order more than 5 copies qualify for a one-third discount on the £3.50 retail price.

New Validation Secretary

Autumn Validation Opportunities

As previously announced the Dieppe Validation weekend will take place over the weekend 25/26 November. Firm bids for places must be submitted to the Director of Validation timsaunders@btinternet.com before the end of this month. Priority will be given to Guides based on the Continent.  A UK validation event will be held in London or the SE over the weekend 14/15 November details to follow.

"Battle of Britain 1940” A lecture and sandwich lunch

Professor Michael Clarke, the Director General of the Royal United Services Institute, will talk about the Battle of Britain 1940.

This is a chance to hear one of Britain's leading military historians and defence commentators on his chosen subject. Before assuming his current appointment, Professor Clarke was Deputy Vice-Principal and Director of Research Development at King's College London. He was the founding Director of the Centre for Defence Studies and of the International Policy Institute at King's College London.

Before that, he taught international politics at the Universities of Aberystwyth, Manchester and Newcastle upon Tyne, New Brunswick, and the Open University.  He has been a Specialist Adviser to the House of Commons Defence Committee since 1997, having served previously with the House of Commons Foreign Affairs Committee. In 2004 he was appointed the UK member of the United Nations Secretary General's Advisory Board on Disarmament Matters. In 2009 he was appointed to the Prime Minister's National Security Forum and in 2010 to the Chief of Defence Staff's new Strategic Advisory Group. He also serves on the Strategic Advisory Panel on Defence for UK Trade and Industry.
