Annual Membership Renewals

Jo Hook writes:

It was lovely to meet so many new members at the AGM and I hope you all enjoyed the weekend.

So far 85 members have renewed their annual membership – thank you.  As announced at the AGM for member who wish to pay for three years membership in one go we will be offering a 10% discount.  Therefore the total cost for three years of membership will be £202.50.  This is irrespective or whether or not there is a rise in Guild membership fees.

For members who wish to do this please either send me a cheque with your name and membership number on the back or if paying by BACs send me an email to confirm payment has been made PLEASE NOTE YOU MUST LET ME KNOW THAT PAYMENT HAS BEEN MADE FOR THREE YEARS SO THAT I CAN MARK UP OUR RECORDS ACCORDINGLY.

For this members who have already sent their membership fees through for the new membership year and want to take advantage of this discount the payment including discount will be £127.50 again please adopt the same procedure for sending payment through.

If anyone has any queries please contact me on mbr.sec@gbg-international.com

Help Wanted

Paul Oldfield writes:

I work with a VC research group, with my part of ship being mainly WW1 Western Front. However, another researcher is having difficulty reading the inscription on the grave of John Sinnott VC in Morden Cemetery (previously known as Battersea New Cemetery), Lower Morden Lane, Morden, Surrey SM4 4NU. As the chap lives in Bendigo, Australia it is quite difficult for him to nip out and take a picture himself. Would a kind member of the Guild who lives in the area be prepared to visit the site, take a clear picture and e-mail it to me please?  Attached is a poor picture of the headstone, with much of the inscription obscured by grass, and a cemetery plan. Sinnott is buried in the RC Section, Grave H-10. If the wording is unclear, perhaps a verbatim written copy could be made?

If you can help please rely to Paul at oldfield118@btinternet.com

The Battle for Lake Tanganyika 1915-1916 Mimi and Toutou Go To War

Frank Baldwin writes:

A lecture and sandwich lunch 12.30-2.00pm Wednesday 17th February 2016 Hosted by The Fusiliers Museum London in the Officer's Mess of The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers HM Tower of London.

In what was truly a World War, a campaign was waged in the heart of Africa, thousands of miles from the North Sea and the Western Front. The Kaiser's ships dominated the waters of Lake Tanganyika, on the western flank of Oberstleutnant von Lettow-Worbeck's troops in German East Africa.

A small force of Royal Naval vessels was sent to give battle; in the course of a  deployment lasting fourteen months, the actions of this little flotilla resulted in the capture or sinking of all the German vessels without the loss of a single RN officer or rating, leaving Britain and her Belgian ally in control of the Lake.  The actions even inspired a major film starring Humphrey Bogart and Katherine Hepburn!

Tim Stoneman is an Accredited Member of the International Guild of Battlefield Guides who left the RN in 2007 after 35 years as a warfare officer.  He has a wide knowledge of naval conflict, and has been guiding tour groups on battlefields for many years, both whilst in uniform and since retiring.

Our hosts will be the Fusiliers Museum and the event includes a sandwich lunch a glass of wine and the opportunity to network in the exclusive surroundings of the Fusiliers mess in HM Tower of London. If you would like to attend this lunchtime talk, please make a donation of £25 for each attendee (£20 for members of the Battlefields Trust) and email your name, contact number and any special requirements (dietary/mobility) to helen@battlefieldstrust.org On receipt, email confirmation will be sent together with directions to the venue. If you have any questions, please ring 0207 387 6620. We look forward to welcoming you.

In order for you to be receive a pass allowing you access to the RRF Building inside the Tower of London and be included in the catering you must book at least 48 hours before the event.
