Validation Weekend 25 November

Tim Saunders writes:

It is with regret at we have had to cancel the proposed validation session on the near continent . Only three candidates submitted their names and therefore the travel cost alone made it financially impossible but availability of validators willing to give up a weekend for so few and the lack of audience of informed peers i.e. other Guides were other practical factors.

While the VTeam will have to think again, we do need a significant numnber of guides attending to make Validation events viable.

Associate Member websites/Twitter and Facebook accounts

Secretary writes:

Following the announcement of the change of nomenclature from 'members' to 'associate members' please could I ask that those with personal websites etc. check to ensure that they are now using the changed nomenclature.

New Film Release – Saint Nazaire Raid

Tim Saunders writes:

BHTV and their publishing partners Pen & Sword Digital have released their sixth DVD of the year, this one on the Saint Nazaire Raid. With GBG Guide Paul Oldfield taking the lead, along with extensive participation by veterans of Operation CHARIOT and other Guild Members. The origins and complex anatomy of the raid are unpicked and assembled into one of the truly great stories of the Second World War. Shot on the ground where events unfolded and lavishly illustrated with maps and photographs, BHTV were given unrivalled access to the Normandie Dock, Pump House and other vital targets for he commandos.

Guild Events 2016

Secretary writes:

As members know we try and organise a number of events during the year and whilst we have got Dyle to the Escault event in September 2016 we have nothing else at present. Have any members suggestions as to what events we should hold? What battlefields do members want to learn more about? Suggestions welcomed!

Guild Christmas Lunch Friday December 4th UJC London

Andy Thompson writes:

There is still time (and room) for those who have space in their social calendar for December to attend the guild Christmas lunch.

We have 25 booked for the lunch and this number is likely to rise as members (and friends of the guild) suddenly realise that they are both free and that they can combine a splendid lunch with a Christmas shopping raid on the capital.

Cost £35 – for the full Christmas fare PLUS port. Great value, great company and an excellent way to end the season.

For reason beyond my control I now have to be in Sri Lanka in early December and thus Mike Scott (mike.r.scott@btinternet.com) has kindly offered to act as both host and event organiser and thus please contact him regarding booking a place.

John Kipling

Tony & Valmai Holt write:

Some members may have read the recent article in The Times (probably triggered by a more comprehensive article in the Irish Times) about the CWGC’s recent re-examination of the ‘Is it John Kipling?’ question. For those that would be interested in our reaction we attach a summary.

St Mihiel

John Greene writes:

I have received the following which may be of interest to members:

The latest St. Mihiel Trip-Wire is now available at:

For new readers, we suggest you bookmark this address. It always the site of the latest issue.  Every past issue, however, can be accessed by clicking on "Access Archives" on the top right corner of page 1.

Besides our usual features, this issue of the Trip-Wire focuses on two special matters:

1.  It's our 13th Anniversary issue, so we have some looking back for you.

2.  We have concentrated on Centennial commemorations taking place at the local and state levels. We have tried to encourage our readers to get involved in participating or starting such efforts.  We have picked out a few examples to start.  But if you have an activity you would like us to feature in future issues, please contact us.  For November we have articles on:

·         Books focusing on the WWI experience of specific towns and states.
·         Texas A&M University's Great War publishing program
·         Dayton, Ohio's, great WWI website/Facebook operation
·         Tennessee's New Commission and their first, multi-faceted program.

Best Regards
