Forthcoming Courses

Vern Littley writes

Members may be interested in some forthcoming courses from Future Learn regarding the Holocaust.

Problems on Tour

Secretary writes:

Members may have seen this article about a food poisoning problem on a recent school battlefields tour - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-leeds-34325884. Hopefully it wasn't one guided by one of our members as it must have been pretty awful! It does show how well the Belgium authorities can respond.

Essex Farm

Secretary writes:

Members may wish to note various developments that the CWGC is proposing to undertake at Essex farm Cemetery. See the attached briefing note. These may involve restriction of access at times.

Agincourt 600

Secretary writes:

Members living near Cardiff may be interested to note the following received from Cardiff Firing Line Museum:

I’m delighted to invite you to our next historical dinner and talk which commemorates the Battle of Agincourt fought 600 years ago on 25th October this year. The dinner is to be held at the St. David’s Hotel in Cardiff Bay.  I am pleased to say that our speaker on this occasion will be the well-known actor, Robert Hardy, and his talk will cover the Welsh Long Bow which was used with such devastating effect at the battle.

Robert Hardy was born on the 29th October 1925, and educated at Rugby School.  He then read English under C S Lewis and J R R Tolkien at Magdalen College, Oxford, where his studies were interrupted by voluntary service in the Royal Air Force.

He has been a trustee of the World Wild Life Fund, the Royal Armouries and the Mary Rose Trust.  The latter two have allowed him a unique chance to study at first hand the Longbow, on which he has become widely recognised as a leading expert.  The weapon is the subject of his books Longbow: A Social and Military History and The Great Warbow.

He was awarded a CBE in 1981 and honorary Doctorates of Letters by three universities.  He was Master of the Worshipful Company of Bowyers 1990-1992 and his interests include archery, bowyery, conservation and horsemanship.  He is a member of the Royal Toxophilite Society, the British Longbow Club and the Woodmen of Arden.
