Royal Sussex Regiment honours the Fallen

Ryan Gearing writes:

As part of the First World War commemorations, The Royal Sussex Regimental Association is unveiling a new Monument at Priez, France on 10th September 2014, where the county regiment suffered its first casualties one hundred years ago to the day. It will not only be a memorial to the 22 members of the Regiment that died that day, all of whom will be listed on it by name, but will also honour the memory inscribed in English and French of the 7,302 officers and men who died while serving in one of the Regiment’s twenty Battalions during the Great War.

The cost of the monument project is £60,000 and over £22,000 has been raised so far in fund-raising activities. The Regimental Association is today appealing for public and corporate donations to be able to complete this project marking this unique event in the centenary calendar and enable descendants and visitors to the Western Front to reflect on the service, valour and losses of the Regiment and the County of Sussex for another hundred years.

Donations can be made online at https://mydonate.bt.com/events/priez or by post with cheques/postal orders made out to “War Memorial Fund” and sent to: Mr B Hudson, 29 Henry Avenue, Littlehampton, BN16 2PA.

News and updates about the memorial project can be followed online at Twitter @RoyalSussexRegt or Facebook/royalsussexregiment

Request for Help

Secretary writes:

I have received the following from J Rafaeli. If anyone can help please could they get in touch directly.

I am a writer from London preparing a piece for a commemorative publication around the Centenary of the Great War, being produced in collaboration with SSAFA. In particular I am writing about how veterans of the First World War sought to reunite with former comrades  (reunions, memorials, community projects and battlefield visits etc.) in the decades after the War.

In my research I of course became interested in Battlefield Guides and the amazing work they do.

I thought perhaps your members might have some personal memories of times that veterans (or their families), have come on battlefield tours, and might like to share them for this piece. Everything would be fully credited, and very very much appreciated - and is towards a good cause. Perhaps you could circulate this to your membership?

Time is somewhat of the essence, as I haven't been given long for this.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Many thanks and all best,

JS Rafaeli

New trail retraces Napoleon’s historic steps in Wallonia

John Greene writes:

The “Napoleon Trail in Wallonia” – a tourist trail retracing the steps of the Emperor in Belgium during his hundred days campaign in 1815 – was officially opened recently by the Walloon Minister for Tourism Paul Furlan.
The trail, extending over 94 kilometres from Beaumont to Waterloo, was conceived with the help of historians and follows the footsteps of the Emperor made nearly 200 years ago.

A Michelin trail guide, co-written by the Belgian historian Philippe Raxhon, accompanies the new Napoleon Trail and includes historical anecdotes, event listings, cycle routes and a selection of locations for food and lodging. Those without a guide can also follow the some 200 signs along the route itself. The signs indicate points of interest “such as battlegrounds, where Napoleon slept and other various anecdotes,” explained spokesperson Jean Fassiaux at the inauguration.

The trail, launched in the lead up to the Battle of Waterloo’s bicentennial in 2015, “is also intended to encourage visitors to come to Wallonia” and offer them “new ways to discover our rich heritage,” noted Fassiaux.

A GPS circuit is being finalised for those visiting the Napoleon Trail by bike or car, as well as hikers equipped with smartphones or tablets. Seven video clips and a 15-minute documentary are also being released to complement the newly inaugurated trail. More information is available at www.laroutenapoleonenwallonie.be
