Regional Event at Mere Wiltshire 23 February 2014

Ian Mitchell writes:

The South West regional group will be holding a Guild event at Mere in Wiltshire from 10.00– 3.00 on Sunday 23rd February 2014. The main focus of the day will be a study of the raid on the port of Saint Nazaire in France on 28 March 1942. We will also learn about the role of the village of Mere and the surrounding area in the Second World War.

Paul Oldfield has very kindly agreed to first give a presentation on the raid which he has studied in detail in order to guide tours on Operation Chariot.  We will then adjourn to the George Inn in Mere and there meet Lieutenant Colonel Bob Montgomery who won a Military Cross for his work as part of the demolitions party during the operation.

Bob Montgomery is now 93 and frail but has very kindly agreed to answer questions on his role in the raid for about 20 minutes and then have lunch with us. After lunch Ian Mitchell from the Guild (who lives in Mere) will, weather permitting, take us on a brief walk up to the 43rd Wessex Division memorial on castle Hill at Mere. He will talk a little about the memorial, the 43rd Division and Mere during the Second World War.   The event will finish at about 3.00pm.

The number of people who can attend this unique event will be limited to a maximum of 15 in total. This is due to available space in a private room which we have secured at the George Inn at Mere for lunch.   In order to cover the costs of hire of a local meeting room and a projector a fee of £5 person will be levied from those who attend. Detailed instructions and a timetable for this event will be issued nearer the date. Guild members interested in attending should e mail Ian Mitchell at imitchell195@btinternet.com by the end of this week.
