Validation Update
Chris Finn writes:
The validation day held at the Bosworth Battlefield Centre
last Saturday was very successful with both Assignment 5s being Passes, and 3
out of 4 Assignment 6s Passes. On the last one Glen Hearnden also
achieved his Badge. My particular thanks go to Jo Hook for doing six
validations on-the-trot, four of them as Lead Validator, and for driving three
hours each way for the privilege !
Having validated a number of Assignment 6s at the AGM and
Verified every subsequent one I have a couple of observations:
The first is that an increasing number of candidates are
setting complex scenarios for the assignment, which is not required. The
result of this is that, firstly, candidates are spending far too much time
introducing their subject and, consequently, not concentrating on meeting
the stated requirements. Secondly, there is a tendency to reply to some
questions, perhaps asked to enable the candidate to provide more evidence of a
particular skill, along the lines of "I would have covered this at the
previous stand". This is, incidentally, also starting to appear in
some Assignment 1s. A brief introduction to the subject battle is all
that is needed, then you can concentrate on the selected sources and how you
would use them on a tour.
My second observation is about the number of sources
used. Too few will not allow you to evidence all the required skills; too
many will swamp the validators in detail and prevent depth of analysis.
When doing Assignment 6, and any other one for that matter,
read the Task, Outcomes and Advice carefully and when you have completed it
check through it to ensure you have provided the evidence required of the
various skills for that Assignment. Do not create additional tasks or
restrictions of your own.
When submitting a written assignment would candidates please
use the electronic file-naming convention advised in a previous Guild Update
namely: name, assignment and date eg FRED BLOGGS A8B 16 SEP 15.pdf or
.docx etc. Please also use the dval, cval and valsec@gbg-international.com
email addresses for all validation matters, not our various personal email
addresses.
So far there are only three takers for the 14 or 15 November
Validation Day and one for the Dieppe Validation day in late November- this is
not enough to make either event viable. So, if you are considering doing
Assignments 1, 5 or 6 before the AGM please let myself or Tim Saunders
respectively know as soon as possible.
Lastly, the next AGM is on 29 to 31 January 2016. For
anyone hoping to be awarded their Badge there please note that the deadline for
receiving written assignments in time for them to be Validated by the AGM is
Monday 28 December 2015. This is to allow time for the candidate to remedy
any Referral, if they are quick. However, there will be no assessment of
written assignments at the AGM as this puts undue pressure on the Validators.
