Member Mike Jarmain
Mike Peters writes:
Fellow Members,
It is with sadness that I have to inform you of the death of
one of our number. Mike Jarmain died from bowel cancer aged 47 on Saturday 6th
February. Those of us who knew Mike and had the pleasure of sharing time with
him will remember him as an energetic, enthusiastic and gentle man with a
passion for French patisserie!
I met Mike when he attended my Guide Training courses, he
was an outstanding Guide who combined his love of the outdoors with a passion
for history, using both his skill-set as a teacher and his experience as a
soldier. Mike kept his illness to himself and was even planning to attend the
AGM weekend with his wife Judy. Sadly Mike had to cancel his attendance to go
back into hospital and he died just a week later. Mike's funeral took place today
at Aberystwyth crematorium. The Guild has sent a donation in his memory to Ty
Olwen Hospice at Morriston Hospital Swansea and, of course, Mike's name will be
added to our Last Stand Memorial Centre Piece.
Our thoughts are with his wife Judy and his family.

Help Wanted
Frank Baldwin writes:
I have been asked by the Isle of Man Post Office if anyone
would be willing to help with their stand for about an hour in the afternoon of
on 18th February at the Spring Stampex 2016. They are launching their
Somme Centenary stamps which are based on images, mainly from the Somme.
They were looking for someone to answer questions about the
the memorials shown on the stamps.
It’s the Business Design Centre Islington and they may pay
C. £50. I'd be very grateful if you could let me know if anyone is interested.

Help Wanted
Vivienne Whelpton writes:
I would be very grateful if a Guild member who intends to be
on the Somme in early October this year would be willing to place a wreath (I
will supply the wreath) on the grave of Leslie Coulson in Grove Town Cemetery
on Saturday 8 October and to sign the Visitors’ Book on her behalf. She is
unable to be on the Somme that week-end and, having written a study of the
young poet (‘Leslie Coulson: a Singer Once’, published by Cecil Woolf), she
would be sorry not to see the centenary of his death commemorated. Coulson was
a sergeant in the Rangers and was mortally wounded at Les Bouefs on 7 October
1916. If the volunteering member will be guiding a group in the area at the
time, Vivien would also be very happy to furnish the material for a stand at
the cemetery.
Vivien can be contacted at v.whelpton@btopenworld.com
